As I’ve been told many times after voicing a strong opinion about paint color picks, “Tracey, what do you really think?” (I’m laughing as I type this!)

I wish they would choose easy to use paint colors, but sigh some years they do not.

2023 Paint Color of the Year Review

First let’s take quick look back at the 2023 paint colors of the year. Last year when I pulled together the paint colors of the year for the four major brands, I thought “yuck”.

2023 definitely was different, but variety is the spice of life right? The value of the paint colors is VERY dark and moody, which can be hard to live with or decorate around.

Then there were the “non-color” colors like a shade of white and black. I never did embrace the 2023 paint colors of the year when decorating my own home.

Benjamin Moore 2023 Paint Color of the Year

raspberry-blush-benjamin-moore-2023-color-of-the-year

Raspberry Blush, 2208-30

Benjamin Moore describes this as a vivacious shade of coral tinged with pink, Raspberry Blush enlivens the senses with an electric optimism

“Envelop yourself with this tart hue and use on walls, ceiling, and trim to create an impactful color statement.”

Image Courtesy of Benjamin Moore: Color of the Year 2023, Raspberry Blush

A piece of furniture would make quite a statement in this optimistic coral with a hint of pink.

Maybe an accent wall, but not seeing a whole room in this color. It feels like it would be WAY to stimulating. Even Benjamin Moore is recommending using this color as an pop versus for a full room.

Sherwin Williams 2023 Paint Color of the Year

redend-point-sherwin-williams-2023-color-of-the-year

Redend Point, SW 9081

Sherwin Williams describes this color as minimal, calming, and intriguing.

“Minimal yet cozy, this color creates a comforting backdrop for the everyday moments that matter.”

Here is the 2023 color of the year. Do I love Redend Point? To be blunt NOPE. Adobe and clay colors are not my preference.

My preference is to see adobe and clay colors in nature (like the mountains of CO), but not in my home.

Redend Point may be a TOUGH color to live with long-term. It’s definitely going to feel trendy and fade out in a year or two.

HGTV Sherwin Williams 2023 Paint Color of the Year

darkroom-hgtv-sw-2023-color-of-the-year

Darkroom, HGSW7083

HGTV SW says it’s inspired by the desire to craft a comfortable, yet elegant and romantic home.

“This alluring black is a classic for heritage interiors, yet modernly retro for a throwback inspired aesthetic. It’s a new neutral that creates dimension.”

Image courtesy of HGTV Sherwin Williams: Color of the Year 2023, Darkroom

Darkroom definitely feels vintage and a throw back to the Victorian era.

Again I would use this color sparingly as an accent wall or on wainscoting or board and batten.

You can read what I wrote about using black in a bedroom so you may want to avoid it.

Behr 2023 Paint Color of the Year

blank-canvas-behr-2023-color-of-the-year

Blank Canvas, DC-003

Behr simply states: Find your center. Blank Canvas renews every room of the home.

“Blank Canvas effortlessly offers a clean and inviting blank slate that allows individuality and creativity to flow freely”

You can read Behr’s consumer research on why they chose Blank Canvas for 2023. Let me know if it resonates with you in the comments.

The options are endless for this very versatile white! Use it in an entryway, living room, kitchen, bedroom or bathroom.

This is a timeless “no regret” paint color. Normally I LOVE color, but at this time in our history I think white just makes sense.

Glidden 2023 Paint Color of the Year

vining-ivy-ppg-glidden-2023-color-of-the-year

Vining Ivy, PPG1148-6

This is an enchanting deep aqua representing contemporary and traditional styles, perfectly marrying a touch of the past and a taste of the future.

It makes a soothing statement, evoking an enchanting and rejuvenating experience.

Image courtesy of PPG: Color of the Year 2023, Vining Ivy

A very pretty color, but when I look at it I don’t think “new” or a “new trend” paint color.

This is a SAFE color to use, but since it is so dark using it as an accent is the best option.

OR you could use it for a kitchen island or bank of cabinets. I predicted jewel tones as an emerging trend for kitchen cabinets in 2022.

I’ve linked where I can to peel and stick samples to try at your house!

YES! I’ve covered the Kitchen Color and Cabinet Trends too!

Tell me in the comments if you are inspired to use any of these colors for a new project in your home.

The Valspar 2024 color of the year Renew Blue is one I am considering for my office cabinet makeover, but it maybe too vibrant. I’m looking at Sparkling Lake 5002-3B as another option.

What IS the Must Have Paint Color for 2024?

You may be surprised by my prediction of which color is the must have paint color for 2024.

Which color do I think will be the most popular color in 2024? Definitely any shade of dark brown or soft charcoal. Why is that?

It takes 2 to 3 years for paint color trends to take hold and become mainstream in consumer’s homes. That’s when they become acceptable and not “trend colors”.

Porch Daydreamer

In 2021, Sherwin Williams announced Urbane Bronze as the color of the year. This is THE original color that’s influencing paint color interior design trends in 2023.

EVERYONE I know wants to paint a wall Urbane Bronze. I keep telling them not to ha, ha!

Why? This dark brown and black trend will be flowing away into dusty blue paint colors before you know it 🙂

Seriously you do you! Trend colors are just that. It is fun to see how paint colors are changing year to year and over time.

Home decor companies start producing products to work with the new paint colors. It’s a very symbiotic relationship.

After 3 years or so, you’ll notice it gets harder to find the right color of pillow covers to match your wall colors. That’s because paint colors naturally shift in tone and hue.

  1. Hi, Tracey.
Thanks for hitting on this subject. I am now and always have been a light and brite gal. I usually choose to bring in bolder colors with fabric (because I love fabric) so your pillow selections got my attention. I tend to fall in and out of love with color combos, so I am unwilling to commit to anything that will eat up my time after I grow tired of it – colorwise. In the end I think we choose what we like and dismiss what the authorities suggest. All that said I can see any one of these colors as an anchor for one of todays wild wallpapers. Tho, wallpaper is a whole new ballgame. I love your idea of repainting after 10 years. Inspiration is contagious when sparked by fresh paint.

  2. Tracey thank you for keeping us up to date on paint trends. I’m curious what Benjamin Moore will release! Not a fan of any of these but if I had to pick one it would be the offwhite. Why are vendors not talking to survey groups to get their aspirations?

  3. Hi Tracey,
Always enjoy your posts, but I , like you, was so very disappointed in the colors chosen for this year. I do like Behr’s white (as a blank canvas) and love Sherwin Williams Silvermist, Evergreen, basically the bottom left corner of the palette card.
The dark color they choose for HGTV, is very close to a color I used on our beachouse bedroom accent wall in 2014, and still love… Thunder something or other. So, maybe I was really ahead of my time.😂

Otherwise, thumbs down to the so called colors of the year. Don’t care who uses them, I’m know it won’t be me. Haha!

    1. Hi, Linda! You were definitely ahead of your time and how cool. I love that idea for a beach house bedroom (says nap time on a rainy day to me!).

      1. Totally agree with all you wrote! The adobe color has to be the worst one of all! Not sure what they were thinking but I don’t feel the least bit inspired or motivated to use any of them!

  4. In a word……Ugly. What were they thinking? I wouldn’t pick any of these for my home. I agree with Deb on the calamine lotion color, lol. That made me laugh too.
Thank you for all the info you provide.

  5. It’s almost like they are trying to not sell paint. But alas, maybe there is some truth to that. It instantly brought to mind the color pallette of cars these days. Basic and uninviting. The whole pallette makes me feel sad and disappointed, a truly visceral but lackadaisical response. It feels so utalitarian. On the plus side, I know I won’t be picking any trendy colors this year. 🙂

    1. Hi, Erica! Agree on the cars…like what is that gray/khaki color now? Don’t get it, but I do have a black car ha ha. I definitely am not a trend follower with paint colors and end up choosing colors I love for my home. The only thing I will do is change to a similar color for an updated look that has a little different undertone 🙂

  6. I would say I agree 100% with your “yuck” analysis. The Behr choice is great in large part because it contrasts against the muddiness almost of the others, but the fresh start isn’t bad either. PPG isn’t too bad – reminds me of the color I have in my office – Aegean Sea – which was Benjamin Moore’s 2021 color of the year. I do like mine better though 😉 Overall, definitely an odd mix of colors and several that I would never ever use, not even as a “pop” (really no pop in some of these!) of color.

    1. Hi, Heather! Yes agree with all that you said too. I loved Aegean Sea too and that general color type of color. Guess we all have to pick our own trending colors this year 🙂

  7. In a word, I think the SW color of the year is hideous and one I would never, ever consider using in my home. Don’t like any of them, actually…..Black??? really???…. except for Blank Canvas, which is not much to shout about with so many white/cream colors available already. Just my opinion, for what it’s worth.
I enjoy all of your posts so much, look forward to them and always learn a lot! Thanks for what you do!

  8. I think Sherwin Williams paint picker must have been on vacation and someone else chose their colors. I like color so I was disappointed with Behr’s choice but I do understand as the majority of my walls are painted a white color but I also have three accent walls painted various shades of blue. Therefore I do like vining ivy but I would only use it in a room that had lots of natural light. Sherwin Williams color reminded me of an old bottle of calamine lotion. I just don’t get it.
Looking forward to your reviews after you see what Benjamin Moore has to offer. Thanks for your opinion on these paint colors. Looking forward to seeing your bathroom!
