Top 2023 Paint Color Trend: Neutrals

The craziest thing happened this year that I’ve never seen the paint brands do before.

The 2023 Colors of the Year were ALL different and there wasn’t a SINGLE theme across the selections.

2022 was an incredibly chaotic year and there wasn’t much consensus on anything.

Possibly that is being reflected in the new paint color picks. When I pulled the basic colors of the year together, I literally said YUCK.

Luckily, there are deeper palettes of colors to choose from and why I develop my top paint color selections each year.

FYI, Valspar doesn’t select just one color. Their top color is Ivory Brown.

2023 Paint Color of the Year

  • Benjamin Moore – Raspberry Blush
  • Sherwin Williams – Redend Point
  • Behr – Blank Canvas
  • HGTV by Sherwin Williams – Darkroom
  • PPG – Vining Ivy
  • Valspar – Ivory Brown

RASPBERRY BLUSH, 2208-30 Benjamin Moore describes this as a vivacious shade of coral tinged with pink, Raspberry Blush enlivens the senses with an electric optimism.

REDEND POINT, SW 9081 Sherwin Williams describes this color as minimal, calming, and intriguing. “Minimal yet cozy, this color creates a comforting backdrop for the everyday moments that matter.”

VINING IVY, PPG1148-6 PPG says this is an enchanting deep aqua representing contemporary and traditional styles, perfectly marrying a touch of the past and a taste of the future.

IVORY BROWN, 6006-1C Valspar describes this color as “Soft and light, this natural color is calming, positive and full of possibilities.”

Valspar Color of the Year 2023

See what I mean? Two colors are “non-colors” black and white. Then a bright coral and a muted clay color.

I threw in PPG because I do see deep aquas across all of the paint color palettes and Valspar as a reference.

This made my picks this year a lot more difficult!

But I am up for the task of determining the colors of the new year.

2023 Popular Paint Color Trends

Now let’s do a deep dive into all of the 2023 trend paint colors from the major paint companies.

In 2022, the colors were soft usable and pretty. Grayed green was the HOT color for all of the brands.

my 2022 analysis predicted color trends in 2023:

  • Warm pinks are developing into peach and deeper brick tones.
  • Deep berry, violet and lilac are new on the scene.
  • Primary and clean bright colors are popping up as accents.
  • Moving to warmer toned neutrals.

Here are the 2023 Sherwin-Williams 40 paint colors. I see new color trends emerging…what do you see?

Top 6 Interior PAINT COLOR TRENDS in 2023:

  1. Various shades of beige, taupe and shades of coffee dominate.
  2. Warm terracotta and clays are the heart of the colors this year.
  3. A touch of nostalgia is represented with shades of chartreuse and mauve.
  4. Green and blues are minimized but moving toward deep aquas.
  5. Grays have all but disappeared and black is now on the scene.
  6. Deep golds and various shades of yellow are emerging.

I predicted back in 2020 that we would be saying good-bye to gray!

“As trends change, paint color is truly the most inexpensive way to update your home and refresh the look.”

Porch Daydreamer

The ONLY 2023 trend paint color that I personally have in my home is PURE WHITE.

It’s OK not to follow the trends and my advice is to choose colors you love that work with your home decor.

“Blank Canvas” is perfect paint color as we look to 2023. Behr is the brand that expertly and succinctly represented the 2023 paint color trends.

Porch Daydreamer

In my color of the year write up, my analysis pointed to Behr being the paint brand that got the color of the year correct for 2023.

Porch Daydreamer® 2023 Paint Color Picks

My hope is you find a color that you are interested in and want to explore in the coming year.

In all honesty, yellows (especially chartreuse) I struggle with but they are too important to ignore in 2023.

Neutrals as I mentioned earlier DOMINATED the Sherwin Williams picks, so I worked to build in actual color from the various palettes to balance out the mix.

Quick key to the abbreviations:

What are your thoughts? Are there colors in this collection that will work in your home?

My goal is always to find a cohesive mix of paint colors that can work together to tell a story about the new paint color trends.

Are you looking for a specific color group for one of your decorating projects?

2023 Paint Picks by Color Type

To help you I’ve narrowed down into even more specific groups of colors:

  1. White Paint Colors in 2023
  2. Neutral Paint Colors in 2023
  3. Blue Paint Colors in 2023
  4. Green Paint Colors in 2023
  5. Earth Tone Paint Colors in 2023
  6. Red and Coral Colors in 2023
  7. Purple Colors in 2023
  8. Yellow Colors in 2023

You can click the links to jump straight to those colors.

best White paint colors 2023

1. B Blank Canvas | 2. SW Pure White | 3. V Cozy White | 4. SW Pediment | 5. SW Kestrel White | 6. V Villa Grey | 7. B Spanish Sand | 8. SW Skyline Steel

As you can see the neutrals are shades of off-white, cream, and greige.

They progress into deep dark browns and coffee colors.

Gone are stark white walls! My FAVORITE WHITE is Sherwin Williams, Pure White.

It works with warm and cool colors with ease.

Best neutral Paint Colors 2023

2023-paint-colors-best-interior-wall-colors-neutral-porch-daydreamer

1. SW Shiitake | 2. V Ivory Brown | 3. SW Cool Beige | 4. SW Antler Velvet | 5. B Perfect Taupe | 6. SW Chatura Gray | 7. SW Threshold Taupe | 8. SW Urbane Bronze

Beige, Greige, Taupe and Coffee are at the heart of this palette.

Shades of mushroom have definitely become prominent in 2023.

Watch for the undertones in beiges they can go red and purple!

best blue paint colors

1. V Rising Tide | 2. SW Indigo | 3. B Half Sea Fog | 4. V Everglade Deck | 5. B Sophisticated Teal | 6. BM North Sea Green

If you are a longtime follow of Porch Daydreamer, you know I am a “blue person”.

I am pretty disappointed there are so FEW blues that are easy to use.

The deep shades are beautiful, but be used as a backdrop or accent wall in your home.

best Green paint colors

1. SW Evergreen Fog | 2. B Conifer Green | 3. V Green Trellis | 4. SW Kale Green | 5. SW Silvermist | 6. SW Blue Peacock

The greens are primarily yellow based, which can be hard when decorating a room.

Sherwin Williams kept their 2022 color of the year Evergreen Fog in the mix again this year. Typically they carry forward the color of the year.

Loving both of the bottom colors. Blue Peacock is DARK, so use it sparingly as it approaches black.

Best terracotta and Earth tone Paint Colors

2023-paint-colors-best-interior-wall-colors-clay-terracotta-porch-daydreamer

1. SW Malted Milk | 2. SW Likeable Sand | 3. BM Conch Shell | 4. SW Reddend Earth | 5. SW Redend Point | 6. SW Carnelian

Sherwin Williams LEANED into the earth tones in various shades of clay.

There are areas of the country where decorating with these colors makes sense, but in much of the country I don’t see these colors being widely embraced.

I did attend the Sherwin Williams Colormix 2023 forecast and saw a flat lay mood board with the color of the year Redend Point.

It was pretty, but they pushed the blush undertone of the color. So lean into that if you use it!

Best Red and coral Paint colors

2023-paint-colors-best-interior-wall-colors-reds-corals-porch-daydreamer

1. BM Raspberry Blush | 2. SW Peppery | 3. SW Toile Red | 4. BM Cinnamon | 5. B Vermilion | 6. V Southern Road

Rusty red is a color that we saw last year and here it is again!

All of the reds are DEEP. I’m still not certain why Benjamin Moore chose Raspberry Blush and every color in their 2023 trend palette is very hard to use.

When I look at this palette I think LIPSTICK! Shades for a wide variety of skin tones.

I don’t see these paint colors dominating interior walls in 2023.

Best Purple and Plum Paint Colors

2023-paint-colors-best-interior-wall-colors-purple-porch-daydreamer

1 . BM New Age | 2. SW Wallflower | 3. SW Studio Mauve | 4. SW Fabulous Grape | 5. B Aubergine | 6. BM Wenge

Mauve is BACK in every value from light to very dark.

There are claims that mauve is the new millennial pink and will take over in 2023. My guess is we will see more and more home decor in varying shades of mauve.

Mauve is actually a very OLD FASHION color dating back to the late 1800’s. What is old is new again!

Best Yellow Paint Colors

1. SW Chartreuse | 2. BM Savannah Green | 3. SW White Raisin | 4. HGTV Restrained Gold | 5. SW Serape | 6. B Spiced Mustard

Hello Chartreuse I see you! Did you know this color was named after a French liquor from the 1700’s?

The dye used back in that era was made from ARSENIC, which is a poison. Maybe that’s why I don’t like the color – just get a back vibe when I look at it do you?

The color was revived in 1920’s, but I believe this color was chosen as a reflection of the 1950’s.

We see Chartreuse in fashion, but I’m not seeing it on interior walls for most people!

I added a deep gold Serape ( it looks bright here), but it’s very muted and warm.

Is orange on the way for 2024?

My hope is you feel well informed on all of the 2023 paint colors trending in the coming year.

  1. I have been struggling to decide on a deep gray/navy to paint my kitchen island during our upcoming renovation. I am finding that the moodier ones with a bit of green seem to work best… its great to see that you are predicting a slight move toward more teal shades. After reading this, I am much more confident in my decision making! Thank you!!!

  2. Hi Tracey, I have enjoyed your wonderful paint expertise and like you, blue is my favorite color.
Thanks for the great paint tutorials. Don’t know if you can give advice on this but I’m general do you paint a concrete front porch 2-3 shades darker than the color of the main body of your house. I see you went with a different color for your porch.
    Thanks,
    Debbie

    1. Thanks, Debbie! My porches are tiled and I chose a deep slate blue to coordinate with my exterior paint colors (deep blue and tan sunroom). For painted concrete, that’s a whole other thing!

  3. Hi Tracey, this post is so full of wonderful colors and recommendations. I bookmarked it so I can continue to reference it. As for Christmas, I feel your heart and I truly do understand how hard things can be especially with the loss of your Dad. I have seen how beautifully your house is decorated for Christmas and I know you will do amazing decorating this year. cheering you on.
    a fan and friend.

  4. Judy Gronowski says:

    Hi Tracey
I love all the colors you picked. With all your experience with color and paint can you suggest a color or 2 for me?
I have a beige tile floor throughout my house that I must keep for awhile but the tile has a pink undertone so many colors don’t look good with. Any suggestions?
    Judy

    1. Hi, Judy! I currently don’t offer selecting paint colors for individuals, but will be offering that service in the new year.

  5. ohhh I always look forward to your color recommendations, I use your color trends when choosing paint colors!

in my opinion when it comes to paint, reds and purples should never be used! haha

thanks for all your painting & color knowledge!

    1. Hi, June! Thank you and I appreciate that you look forward to my annual paint color picks. A pale purple or mauve can be pretty in certain rooms and I’m with you on red. Tried red paint exactly ONCE (90’s) and painted over it in a week. Too stimulating. I interviewed a Feng Shui expert and they shy away from red for the most part too, only on furniture.
