Create the Most Organized Shoe Closet Ever (on a Budget)
Here’s exactly how I took my messy shoe closet and turned it into the most organized shoe system ever. This budget friendly system helped me organize 84 pairs of shoes in a very SMALL closet.
If your closet feels like a shoe store exploded and you’re constantly digging through piles to find your favorite pair – I’ve been there!
For the longest time I would just kick off my shoes, close the closet door and pretend the mess didn’t exist. I hated dealing with those old shoe boxes that had lids!
I needed two hands just to get the top off and even more effort to put it back. So guess what I did? I didn’t! Which meant shoes were everywhere and nothing ever stayed neat.

Now? I just pop open the front door of my clear shoe bin and close when I’m done. Each pair of shoes has its own little home. It’s effortless to stay organized and I never waste time looking for what I want.

Now have a closet that makes me feel like I’m shopping my own personal shoe boutique!
This transformation wasn’t just about neatness it was about function, accessibility, and creating a space that feels clean, calm, and yes, even a little luxurious.
Here’s exactly how I took my chaotic closet and turned it into the most organized shoe system ever!
The Closet Chaos I Started With
Let’s be honest: over time, even the best of us end up with more shoes than we care to admit.
My closet was overflowing with old shoe boxes (you know, the clear kind with broken lids). Plus the effort I’d made or originally organize this closet just turned out to be a broken system.
Before I did anything, I knew one thing: I had to start fresh.
Step 1: The Big Closet Clear-Out
Before any organizing magic could happen, I pulled everything out of the closet. Clothes, shoes, accessories you name it. This helped me:
- See what I had (hello, duplicates!)
- Purge what no longer fit or served me
- Donate or toss worn-out shoes and outdated styles
Tip: Be ruthless here. If you haven’t worn them in over a year, let them go!
What did I do with the old clear boxes? Donated them and gave them to friends for their projects.
My Favorite Closet System: Why I use it over and over to organize
What I love most is how this closet system is fully configurable for every type of situation. Not just the shelves, but the rods too!
Whether you need double hanging sections, extra-long storage for dresses, or an open space for shoe stacks – this system adapts to fit your closet and your needs.

I helped launch this closet system to big retailers about 15 years ago! Ever since I’ve used it in more than just my closet. It’s helped me organize my pantry, attic, and even seasonal home decor. It’s that versatile!
Why I love it:
- Adjustable wire shelving makes customizing easy
- It’s affordable and available on Amazon.com
- Works in small spaces but offers big storage
I moved the rod higher to free up space underneath, added more shelves at strategic heights, and measured everything to ensure I could fit bins stacked to the ceiling!
Yes, it took a little engineering but I didn’t spend a dime and was able to DIY the whole thing.
Project Supply List
Here’s everything I used to complete this makeover (and love!):
Shoes: The System That Changed Everything
Here’s where the magic happened. After tons of research, I landed on clear stackable shoe boxes.
Why I chose these is because they were VERY affordable. I needed over 80 of them! I found the kind with front doors that flip open, lock securely, and the bins lock together side-by-side and top-to-bottom.
That means they stay in place perfectly even when stacked high. Watch how I assemble the shoe boxes and stack them on Amazon.

The only “bad” thing is you do have to assemble them. Just flip on a show or listen to a podcast and get to it!
Why These clear shoe Bins Work:
- Affordable: I found a budget-friendly set on Amazon and assembled all 84 myself
- Modular & Secure: Each one locks to the next so stacks stay aligned
- See-through: No more guessing what’s inside (or not)
- Front-Opening Doors: Grab a pair without unstacking anything
- Clean & Dust-Free: My shoes finally stay neat and protected

I stacked them from the floor, wrapping around the corner of the closet to maximize every inch. Now I can see all my shoes at a glance and they STAY neat.
Plus I found these AMAZING shoe deodorizers that actually work! They take the stick out of everything.
How I Organized My Shoes (so they stay that way)
Having 84 bins may sound like a dream, but only if you know what’s in each one! So I created a layout that’s super functional and easy to maintain.
Step 1: Group shoes by Category
Start by separating your shoes into the major categories:
- Athletic shoes: running, training, walking
- Heels: from pumps to stilettos
- Wedges: summer favorites with height
- Sandals: strappy and flat styles
- Flip flops: quick slip-ons (these dividers help!)
- Boots: ankle, knee-high, and winter
Step 2: Organize by Frequency or Season
Once you have the categories, think about when you wear them:
- Everyday shoes (like sneakers and sandals in summer) go on the middle shelves
- Occasional use (heels or boots) can go on the higher shelves
- Out-of-season shoes go near the bottom or top
For my tall boots, I used larger boot-sized boxes and placed them on the very top shelf. They’re easy to access when I need them in winter but stay out of the way the rest of the year.

Step 3: Sort by Color (Optional but So Pretty!)
I also sorted within each group by color. Ny heels flow from nude to black, and my sneakers go from everyday use to fashion.
It’s not only helpful for choosing what to wear, but it’s visually so satisfying!
Tracey Tip: You can even label the front of the bins with removable stickers or tape if you want an extra layer of organization.
Solving the Baseball Hat Mess: Easy Organization
I had way too many baseball hats that I loved. However, I could never find the one I wanted when I needed it. They used to be thrown on shelves or shoved into corners.
Not anymore! I picked up two neutral fabric storage cubes and rolled my hats vertically, so I can grab one without digging. It’s one of those little tricks that made a huge difference.

One bin holds white/light hats, the other holds dark. It’s so simple, but so effective.
Bonus: These cubes slide right into my wire shelving system and they look pretty too!
Easy Upgrade: Motion Activated Lighting
Closets don’t have to feel like caves. I added motion-activated LED strip lights under the shelves, and now the whole space lights up the moment I open the door.
Not only does it feel high-end, but I can easily see the true colors of my clothes and shoes. I originally found them to light up my linen closet.
Since they’re magnetic, I was able to attach them directly to my wire shelves – no tools needed. If your shelves aren’t metal, they come with a stick-on magnetic strip too!
Tracey Tip: You don’t need an electrician! These are battery-powered and adhesive-backed.
With my shoes in perfect order, I couldn’t just toss clothes back into the closet. I focused on stacking just the essentials:
- Casual pants only: jeans and athletic pants, folded and stacked by color
Everything else hangs neatly and by use and color. It keeps the closet looking open and breezy instead of stuffed and overwhelming.
The closet after one more time!

Final Thoughts: Worth Every Minute
Was it a bit of a project? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. I now have a space where everything has a home, shoes stay clean, and getting dressed feels like shopping in my own little store.
If your closet stresses you out, take it one section at a time. Start with shoes like I did. You’ll be amazed at the difference. And yes, you can do it on a budget.
