Why Outdoor Cushions Get So Dirty
Between pollen, mildew, everyday dirt and debris outdoor cushions can go from fresh to filthy fast.
Especially during rainy periods, when cushions don’t have time to dry and bleach naturally in the sun.
Even though outdoor cushions are designed to handle weather, they’re not immune to stains. Over time, you may notice:
- Mold or mildew stains (especially if the cushions stay damp)
- Dirt, dust, and pollen (the yellow stuff!)
- Stains from sunscreen, bug spray, or food
- Dirty paw prints
If you’re not cleaning your cushions regularly, all of that builds up and shortens the life of the fabric.
With a few simple steps, you can extend the life of your cushions and keep your outdoor space looking clean and stylish.

Patio Cushion Cleaning Solution
I’ve tested all kinds of cleaners over the years, and I always come back to the same thing: a simple bleach and water solution.
This method cuts through the grime, lifts mildew, and leaves your cushions looking brand new again. You’ll be surprised at just how FAST and effective this patio cushion cleaner is.
Plus it’s CHEAP to use regular household bleach you likely already have in your laundry room. You can use it on outdoor pillows and furniture too!
Outdoor Cushion Cleaning Supplies
- Chemical Safe Spray Bottle
- Household Bleach
- High Pressure Hose Nozzle
- Sponge
- Soft Bristle Scrub Brush
- Leaf Blower
- Household Stain Remover
- Bucket
My Homemade Outdoor Cushion Cleaner
Make sure you get a heavy duty spray bottle for this cleaning solution. If you only have a regular spray bottle, know that the bleach will ruin the sprayer (you’ve been warned).
You can make the cleaning solution and store it for later or use it immediately.
- Start by filling a chemical safe spray bottle with 1/3 bleach
- Add WARM water to fill (2/3 water)
- Gently tip up and down to mix
Can You Use This Cleaning Solution on Any Outdoor Cushion?
This method works best on white or neutral cushions made from outdoor-safe fabric like polyester or solution-dyed acrylic.
For colored or patterned cushions, always test in a small hidden area first to check for colorfastness.
If you’re nervous about using bleach, a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water can work too, but it may take more time and scrubbing.
Will bleach damage outdoor fabric?
If your cushions are light in color and made from outdoor-safe fabric, bleach is generally safe. Do not use on dark or patterned fabrics without testing first.
Can I use this method on Sunbrella fabric?
Yes, Sunbrella fabric is bleach-safe. Still, always test first and rinse thoroughly.
Can I put patio cushion in the washing machine?
If your cushion covers are removable, check the tag for washing instructions. Most outdoor cushion covers can be washed on a gentle cycle using warm water, mild detergent, and a splash of bleach. Skip the dryer and let them air dry flat to avoid shrinking.
How to Clean Non-Removable Outdoor Cushions
If your cushion covers don’t come off or you just want a faster method versus removing the covers follow these steps:
Step 1: Remove Loose Dirt from Surface of the Cushion
Remove any leaves, dirt, or pollen using a leaf blower or a soft bristle brush. It’s important to remove physical debris to help the cleaner penetrate the fabric.
If you have a vacuum cleaner you don’t mind using outdoors, you can also vacuum them. I have a vacuum just for pollen that I never use indoors!
Removing Bird Droppings
If you have bird droppings, first clean them off by dipping a sponge into a warm bucket of water and dish soap. Use a sponge to wipe off the stains.
Removing Household Spills
Spilled coffee or red wine? Spray with a good stain remover following the instructions and blot up the stain until removed.
Step 2: Spray With Bleach Solution
Once cushions are COMPLETELY dry move to this step.
Spray the bleach and water mix generously over the entire cushion. Make sure it’s evenly saturated.
I like to tip my cushions up to make it easier to spray. Cover all sides and spray extra solution into piping edges.
Step 3: Let It Sit for 5 to 10 Minutes
Let the solution soak into the cushion, but don’t allow it to dry completely. This step helps kill mold spores and lift stains (you’ll SEE it happen).
If one area is a little more stubborn, apply extra solution and let sit a full 10 minutes.
Step 4: Rinse With a Garden Hose or Pressure Washer
Use your garden hose sprayer on high pressure to rinse the cushion thoroughly. Start at the top of the cushion and push the water down to rinse.
Yes, you can use a pressure washer but make sure it’s on LOW. You don’t want to blow a hole in the fabric.
TRACEY’S TIP: Avoid pressure washers they can damage fabric and seams. A regular spray nozzle will do the trick.
Step 5: Let Cushions Dry in the Sun
Set the cushions upright to let excess water drain in full sunlight (if possible) and if you have one, run your outdoor ceiling fan.
Flip them occasionally to make sure every side gets dry. This also helps prevent future mold and mildew growth.
stubborn areas still dirty? follow these steps:
- Use a 50/50 bleach and water mix.
- Spray on the new cleaning solution.
- Gentle scrub into the surface with the soft bristle brush.
- Leave on for 10 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry.
Real Before and After Results
These are my actual patio cushions covered in mildew after just one season outside. Aphids had left a sticky residue too!
FIY: My seat cushions are off-white not dead white, are from Target, and I’ve never bleached them white using this method.
Now everything looks fresh and clean again. I even clean my upholstered porch swing seat this way too and have for 7 years!
How Often Should You Clean Outdoor Cushions
Keeping up with regular cleaning will extend the life of your cushions and reduce deep cleaning time.
- Spring: Clean after pollen season
- Summer: Spot clean every few weeks
- Fall: Deep clean before storage
- Winter: Store cushions in a dry, protected space
Tips to Keep Outdoor Cushions Cleaner Longer
With a little bit of effort, you can make sure you keep your patio cushions looking like new.
- Store cushions in a deck box, attic or garage when not in use
- Flip and rotate weekly to prevent uneven wear
- Spray cushions with a UV and water-repellent fabric protector
- Avoid leaving wet cushions sitting flat – stand them up to dry.
- Run a ceiling fan during humid days to keep them dry.
Do I need to reapply fabric protectant after cleaning?
It’s a good idea to reapply a spray-on water-repellent after cleaning to help prevent future stains and fading.
I STILL can’t get my patio cushions clean!
So you’ve tried EVERYTHING and they still won’t come clean. My bet is the fabric has aged to the point of rot. OR they aren’t made from outdoor rated solution dyed yarns.
What should you do? If the cushion itself is in good shape, I HIGHLY recommend zip on replacement covers. I’ve used them in my side yard to update the color of my outdoor cushions.
