Cottagecore Guest Bedroom Fit for a Queen: Design Plan

Looking for ideas and inspiration on how to decorate a guest bedroom? Here’s my Cottagecore design plan!

Seriously, I am making over the guest bedroom for a queen.

It’s a long overdue update that I’ve been planning for a while and wanted to try out the Cottagecore style.

We’ve been calling my mom “Queen Jane” since I was a teenager.

My mom looks like a Viking queen with red hair and is classically elegant. The name is appropriate.

She’s had a very hard year with my dad living now in a nursing home.

All of the house and financial responsibilities plus his care have fallen to her at this later stage of her life.

For her visit this Christmas, I decided to surprise her with a guest bedroom makeover. Because she deserves a nice room to relax in and enjoy 🙂

  • Comfy furniture with a lived in look.
  • Floral patterns in textiles, accessories and artwork.
  • Mix of warm neutrals, with pops of color specifically pastels.
  • Vintage home decor like rugs, china, pottery, and whimsical finds.

Both of us have always loved a European design aesthetic, so I decided on an English cottage feel for the room using “cottagecore” style.

Guest Bedroom Before

As many guest bedrooms are leftovers of furniture and accessories, mine is no different.

It’s a mix of stuff with no real plan. Pretty enough, but the yellow looked outdated.

It was getting tired looking after 11 years and right at Thanksgiving my mom asked “are you going to makeover the guest bedroom?”

I said no…”I don’t have the time or the money right now. Or frankly the energy. It’s been a long year [2021] and I don’t have it in me.

Guest Bedroom Before

Well, I came home from visiting her and took one look into the room and got thinking I had a few weeks to pull off and update.

After a call begging my favorite contractor to help me and my favorite seamstress and begging her, they both committed to getting this done in TWO WEEKS!

So I launched into design mode, sourced furniture the longest lead item, and picked the paint colors.

Cottagecore Bedroom Inspiration

You’ll be surprised to hear that the room design started with some old curtains from Pottery Barn in mineral blue and a floral pillow I purchased out in Colorado.

The curtains were originally purchased for the family room and I decided against them. They were too long at 108 inches and why I needed my seamstress to hem them.

Why I linked the mineral blue color is to show you how beautiful it is, but Pottery Barn isn’t making curtains in that color any longer.

Guest Bedroom Paint Color

The color of the curtains started my color story and I found the PERFECT paint match to the curtains.

If you are new to my blog, paint color is my expertise so I usually start there first!

Next, I decided I wanted to add board and batten for an English cottage look and very cottagecore.

My plan was to create enough of shelf ledge to hold artwork.

This would fulfill my mom’s need to arrange things in my house and make it look prettier.

She could be a part of the design before the room was complete 🙂

Cottagecore Bedroom Mood Board

Now for all of the fun little details in the room and the furniture.

I decided on a simple color palette: white, mineral deposit, and black.

Then for the cottagecore aesthetic punches of neutral and aged finishes.

True to the cottagecore design aesthetic there will be a mix of eclectic finds, lots of english cottage and whimsical artwork, with punches of black, and antique worn finishes!

Your guest room is lovely! Would you mind sharing the wall color you used with the Mineral Deposit board and batten?

    1. Hi, Marcia! Thank you and I appreciate you asking this question because I totally forgot to add that color to the blog post. It’s there now for others and it is Sherwin Williams, Pure White.

  2. I was just visiting your post about Cottagecore. Could it be possible to post your reveal? I love everything you do. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You have a beautiful home.

    1. Hi, Karine! Thank you so much. I’ll get it published this week. My dad passed away and I had to leave town unexpectedly so the reveal post got delayed by a couple of weeks.
