Dorm Room Decorating
Decorating a dorm room can be a challenge because you are living with the furniture the university provides and it’s usually very BASIC and OLD. My son’s college dorm room furniture looks very similar to what was in my dorm room a LONG time ago.
For fun, pictures of my sophomore year dorm room at Clemson (along with my large 80’s hair and T-Shirt shoulder pads) are at the end of this post 🙂
How to add style to your dorm room on a budget:
- Choose bedding that is a base to build from for your overall design
- Hang tapestries, photography collages, or Command picture shelves
- Cover the floor with colorful area rugs
- Layer lots of pillows and throws for texture
- Add colorful decals to walls or bookcases
- Incorporate fun lamps that add ambience
- Place unique storage stools not only for storage, but extra seating
- Use cube bookcases and carts for displaying collectibles and for extra storage
When you are on a budget, using storage items as part of your dorm decor is the best option! Form and function is the name of the game in styling your room.
Make SURE to BUY COMMAND ADHESIVE. You will need a ton of it, when you begin decorating.

Do You Have the Interior Design Bug?
Do you now see how fun and affordable styling a dorm room can be? Even if you didn’t find your perfect style here, hopefully I’ve inspired you to create your own ideas using some of the products shown.
For fun, I thought I’d share what my dorm room looked like at Clemson when I was 19 years old!
It was the first room that I decorated on my own outside of my parents home. The style pulled together from trips to Wal-Mart, while on a small budget.
What I can’t believe is I hung curtains (with my Mom’s help) AND covered both the air vent and my desk top in flower contact paper! It seems this decorating bug started a LONG time ago 🙂
Good luck to you in finding budget friendly home decor that expresses your own personal style!
Until next time…
