Easy Ways to Decorate in a Modern Coastal Style

Modern Coastal is a fresh new take on coastal style. See how easy it is to blend white walls, modern elements, and a coastal vibe for this sophisticated style.

If you didn’t know, my new design obsession is Modern Coastal.

I landed on it while searching for ideas when renovating my powder room.

Ever since, I’ve been thinking about redoing other spaces in my home and wanted to take a deeper dive into this design trend!

Sharing with you the key elements of the modern coastal design trend with lots of products to help you nail this style.

Modern Coastal Design Elements

Typical coastal has a very easy breezy beachy feel and I incorporated that more traditional feel in a recent front porch makeover.

While some of the design elements are similar, Modern Coastal pushes the boundaries mixing in a more contemporary feel.

It creates an eclectic design style that makes coastal sophisticated.

Less Hamptons and more Laguna Beach. Here are some of the elements:

  • Driftwood
  • Bleach or distressed finishes
  • Angular elements
  • Pops of black accents
  • Modern lighting
  • Bright white walls
  • Shades of blues and grays
  • Woven textures

It’s mixing  bleached or distressed woods, white, shades of blues, punches of darker colors and black accents, with modern angles. It’s serene, but visually very interesting!

The look is also very eclectic mixing soft and hard together of varying elements.

How-to Bring Modern Coastal to Your Home

Tracey is my name and Pinning is my game 🙂

Yes, I love to search Pinterest for great design ideas and found four Modern Coastal rooms to dissect and explore what makes them so beautiful.

Plus I’m beginning to think a family room makeover is brewing in my soul and am looking into this design style as a big contender, but with softer lines to work with other elements in my home.

Room 1 – Becki Owens Dining Room

Becki Owens designed this dining room to perfection! What is not to love about this room? It’s fairly easy to recreate affordably. The wow factor in the room is the oversized table, paired with woven X back chairs, and a stunning natural modern empire chandelier.

The pop of black in the simple drapery hardware with crisp white drapes gives the room an airy vibe.

Room 2 – Studio McGee Family Room

Studio McGee is one of my favorites to follow on Instagram. I’ve been lucky enough to hear Shea talk about how she turned her Instagram account into an international design business!

You’ll want to see the whole home beyond this one room!

Here she mixes leather, angular elements in pillows and a sofa table, with cozy chairs and a large round reclaimed wood table.

Why not a faux cow hide rug? It’s a great addition of texture in this room.

In a large open spaces, it is always important to divide the room into two distinct sections and I love how Shea mixes in a conversation area.

Room 3 – Studio McGee Family Room

Yes, I’ve got two rooms from Shea 🙂 I wanted to show you a less dramatic take on Modern Coastal from the same designer.

This room is more bleached out in feel, but has all of the same design elements – just mixed in a different way!

Ah the white washed bleached out woods and white slipcovered sofa are so soothing.

The black open lantern foyer light and woven rug provide that extra layer of interest.

Room 4 – Blackband Design

This design firm is a new one to me and their designs fit Modern Coastal to perfection.

There is a lot of inspiration on their site! This is really high end design with custom finishes and furniture.

If I could find something similar, I linked it but much of this is hard to find!

My favorite parts of this space are the table, bar stools, and light fixtures.

Such a fun blend with the more traditional elements.
