If you are anything like me, you love the look of flowers in your garden but want options that require minimal maintenance and are easy to grow. Since I live in a very hot and humid climate, where 99°F is the norm during the summer, it poses some maintenance concerns and a need for a lot of watering!
On Lowe’s there is a great feature that recommends the most popular or best selling plants in your area. If you in the beginning stages of your garden, then I’d recommend starting with this visual reference to see what you like. I’d also encourage you to use the compass on your iPhone (sorry all other phone users I am of no help) to determine what type of sun exposure the different sides of your house receives.
The front of my home faces north with eastern morning sun, which is perfect for a wide variety of plants on my front porch. That means the back of my home faces south and has sun exposure from the west for all-day hot sun. What works in the back has to be very drought, heat and sun tolerant.
Luckily, with regard to watering I found the best solution to keep my plants alive – even when I am traveling – is with an automatic drip irrigation system that is hooked up to my garden hose. I’ve managed to run it all the way up to my 2nd story porch to water my hanging plants without having to get on a ladder. The ¼’ tubing doesn’t come in white, so I bought tan and then painted it to match my trim along with attaching it with white electrical clips.
If you don’t want to get this crazy with a system, then start with the basic kit to water your pots. It easily installs in 30 minutes and I highly recommend it to protect your investment and peace of mind.
Most of the flowers I plant are in containers and by no means am I professing to be an expert on gardening. Instead, I’ll share my tried and true go to shrubs and flowers that survive with the least amount of care and concern. All pictures taken by me, in my various garden areas!
